Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages leading to the facility... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
