In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a different age” and an bold start to his term.

A Historic Leader

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Basic Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing basic services: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
